A Staffordshire golfer is celebrating a hole in one – at the prestigious Els Club in Dubai.

Mike Ankers landed his first ever ace in the final of amateur golf’s The Matchplay Championship. He had just one regret – Sky TV cameras began filming at the hole just 10 minutes after his moment of glory.

Ankers, who plays at Darnford Moors, and Bloxwich Golf Club’s Chris Scott-Douglas finished third tournament with an overall total of 125.

“The hole in one is my first ever,” said Ankers. “I had lasered the flag at 159 yards, the wind was from behind and helping. I chose an eight-iron and as it turned out it was the right choice! “My playing partner Chris and one of our playing partners for the day said immediately I hit the shot: ‘I hope you have your wallet with you?’

The Race To Dubai A Genuine Dream

National Club Golfer, August 2011
"The Race To Dubai A Genuine Dream"

Dear Sir,
While looking through your fine free magazine I came across the advert for the Matchplay Championship Race to Dubai. I was lucky enough to make it out to the Grand Finals at The Els Club and I have to say the course and staff were fantastic, the greens a real test with big slopes and very fast, apparently about 11 on the stimpmeter.

We played a practice round the first day and, on our arrival the next day, your buggy was waiting for you loaded with your clubs, ice water and tees and the GPs.

I would encourage all of your readers to enter this comp as it was a truly amazing experience, and to make it out there on our first attempt was a wonderful end to an already great competition.

Here's hoping to make it next year, we have already entered upon arriving back home.

"Golfing In The Sun!"

The Matchplay Championship finished on a high in Egypt in May with the grand finalists coming from all parts of the UK and Ireland - a true measure of how popular this tournament has become among golfers everywhere.

When Mark McQuoid from Downpatrick struck his opening drive 260 yards towards the Sinai mountains, splitting the first fairway and all under the watchful gaze of the Sky Sports cameras, the 2010 Matchplay Championship finals were well and truly underway. More

His partner Declan Quigley from Kirkistown, Co Down with his distinctive left over right grip was next and didn't disappoint, his drive ending up a few yards short of Mark's.

All the golfers taking part in the grand final soon realised that when playing at the fabulous Taba Heights Golf Resort it really is target golf. This immaculate course winds its way through the desert, with its spectacular views, lush fairways and manicured greens, but there's lots of trouble if your shots go astray. Added to that is the heat, which for the three-days of competition was in the high-30's.

Golfing in the sun!

Over 4,000 entries were received for the 2010 event firmly establishing the Matchplay Championship as the premier event in the amateur golfers calender. Throughout the UK and Ireland golfers are already entering the 2010/11 event which will culminate with a grand final in Dubai May 2011. With the closing date for the next event fast approaching the word is spreading in amateur golf circles that this is a competition you really shouldn't miss.

"We've had a great time at Taba Heights for the last three-years but we're delighted to host the 2010/11 Matchplay Championship final at such a superb course as The Els Club. It makes the tournament even more attractive for keen golfers everywhere", said John Woosey, Managing Director of The Golfers Club which organise the Matchplay Championship. - Close

The Race to Dubai Starts Here

Telegraph, May 3rd, 6th and 15th, 2010
"The Race to Dubai Starts Here"

Across the UK, amateur golfers are preparing to tee up in local qualifiers for the 2010-11 Matchplay Championship in association with The Daily Telegraph, in the hope that they can make it to next year’s grand final at the spectacular Els Club, in Dubai.

They will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the 32 finalists from the 2009-10 Matchplay Championship who have just competed in this year’s grand final at Egypt’s Marriott Taba Heights Golf Resort. There are three separate categories for More the competition – men’s pairs, mixed pairs and men’s non-active pairs – and it is open to golfers of all abilities. The competition format at the grand final is based on the popular Stableford points scoring system, which helps to level the playing field between the high and low handicappers.

The 32 finalists begun the journey to the finals more than 10 months ago and their golfing ability has shone through after coming through local and regional finals to become the last of the 4,000 golfers who entered.

One of the most picturesque golf courses in the world, the Taba Heights Championship Course was the perfect venue for the 2010 finals, set beneath stunning mountains and with the glistening Red Sea just a nine iron away.

The challenging course was in perfect condition during the three days of the finals. The greens were slower than the finalists probably expected, but as organiser John Woosey commented: “It really is target golf on this course. It rewards the brave who attack the pin and punishes those who come up short and have to play from around the green – it’s unlike anything they would have played back in the UK.”

Battling the stifling 40-degree heat and the Red Sea’s strong breeze, the competitors produced some fantastic golf, with lots of points being scored. Playing in front of the Sky Sports cameras didn’t seem to faze them, either. Ultimately, though, there could only be one winning pair in each category.

A storming first day from the youngest finalists – Welsh duo Luke Sandford and Adam ‘Ziggy’ Niblett – saw them take the early lead and they never looked back, holding off Declan Quigley and Mark McQuoid in second and Nick Waring and Ian Watson in third by 11 and 14 points respectively.

“It’s been an incredible experience. The golfing trip of a lifetime,” said Ziggy.“

In the mixed pairs, Surrey couple Hannah Sneath and Jim Giberson took first place with 122 points, having stayed in the lead throughout the three days of play. In second place were Bathgate golfers Karen Burns and Graham Bell, with Towcester husband and wife team David and Tracy Morris bagging third place.

Finally, in the nonactive men’s handicap event, Bristol-based duo Nick Curyer and Spencer O’Leary overhauled Downpartick golfers Patrick Turtle and Cyril Morris.

All of the finalists have already expressed their intentions to make it to the finals next year, which are moving to arguably the ultimate golfing destination in the world – Dubai and will be played at The Els Club, designed as you would expect, by three-time Major winner, Ernie Els and includes a week’s accommodation at the magnificent Marriott Dubai Harbour Hotel. - Close
